About the Authors
Tom Muzila has practiced and taught karate and other martial arts for nearly 55 years. A 5th-degree black belt (Godan) in Shotokan Karate he trained extensively with legendary Master Tsutomu Ohshima and studied kendo, iaido, aikido, kickboxing, and boxing. He competed internationally as a member of the U.S. Shotokan Karate Team.
Muzila served in the U.S. Army Special Forces (Green Berets), completing elite training programs including airborne, ranger, jungle warfare, mountaineering, weapons, pathfinder, survival, sniper, HALO, and scuba. He later specialized in instinctive combat shooting, covert operations, and anti-terrorism.
Internationally respected as a martial arts instructor, he has taught law enforcement agencies, elite military units, Olympic gold medalists, and world champion boxers, focusing on peak performance mindset and warrior mentality.
He holds numerous endurance-based martial arts records, including 24 hours of continuous technique practice, 10,000 strikes in one session, and a three-hour horse stance. His other feats include ultra-marathons, mountain climbs, fire walks, and pulling both a diesel truck and an F-16 jet.
Muzila has more than 40 years of executive protection experience, safeguarding celebrities, diplomats, dignitaries, and two U.S. Presidents. He is the author of Mental Karate: A Warrior’s Guide, has published over 100 articles, and holds a B.A. in Asian Religions.
Marshall Raskind, Ph.D. is an internationally recognized researcher specializing in learning across the lifespan. He is the author of numerous academic and consumer publications and is a frequently-invited speaker at professional conferences. He has served as Research Director at several organizations, and held many advisory board and journal editorship positions.
He holds a second-degree black belt in Shotokan Karate from Master Tsutomu Ohshima. He lives on Bainbridge Island, Washington with his wife Lisa where he continues to practice.
